Engineering Firm Takes On Apprentices

A specialist engineering business based in North Shields has increased its workforce by a third after taking on a number of apprentices.

Northern Engineering Solutions expanded following a record 12 months. It also marks the company's tenth year in business, during which it has worked for the likes of Nissan, Nestle and Jaguar Land Rover.

The four new apprentices are Joe Dunn from Blyth, James Nicholson from Percy Main, Cain Dobson from North Shields and Jackson Bell from Seaton Delaval. They all spent eight weeks at AIS Connect before joining Northern Engineering Solutions for a month-long work experience programme.

Mark Hodges, Director of Northern Engineering Solutions, said: "I came up through the apprentice route, and in that company every tradesman had an apprentice. That was how knowledge was passed down, and it works.

Mark Davey, also a director at the business, added: "Having already worked with AIS for our own coded welders, the four AIS Trainees impressed so much that all four were offered apprenticeships.

"It was fantastic to see their faces when we told them. Taking on apprentices is all part of our succession planning, but we also want to give something back."
